The New Education policy (NEP) 2020 launched on July 29, 2020 may just be what the PGDM institutions ordered. The PGDM that were facing an uncertain future after Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) moved out of the PGDM stream to become full fledged degree granting institutions . "We are importing the freedom of research, the culture of research, freedom of ideas, freedom of curriculum, interdisciplinary studies, experimentation, freedom of governance, that’s what freedom is all about. …(So today) we are actually giving real freedom to our institutes.” – Prakash Javdekar’s response to the IIM Bill in the Lok Sabha, on the 28th of July, 2017" the Education Minister Prakash Javdekar was quited as saying while pushing for the IIM autonomy bill whcih was eventually passed graining the IIMs the right and autonomy to offer their own degrees.

The PGDM institutions were piqued after the IIMs shed their PGDM tag raising concerns whether PGDM would be able to save themselves without the aura of IIMs backing the PGDM concept.

After nearly two years and all the IIMs newer and older having shed their PGDM tag, the remaining PGDM institutions left in the fray numbering over 360 are now actually quite comfortable and are able to breathe fresh air having made a mark on their own without the big boss IIMs spreading their shadow over the PGDM institutions.

The fear that the value of a PGDM from a private institution in the eyes of domestic and international recruiters would fall substantially, disadvantaging the sector and its educational endeavor after the IIMs exited from the PGDM process seem to be ill-founded, two years down the line. The institutions find themselves very much on their own and not jut surviving but also thriving better ironically after losing the IIM shadow

The various media surveys of business schools indicates that there has been no let down in the performance of the PGDM intuitions and if anything they have only improved their relative rankings after coming out of the IIM shadow.

Interestingly in the Covid times, the PGDM institutions rather than the University led departments were agile and quick on their feet to adopt to new technology and experiment with new courses. Concepts like blended classrooms, virtual classrooms etc., were quickly introduced by PGDM institutions even as the pandemic swept through the nation. While overall the Business education community suffered severely from lower admissions and uncertainty, the PGDM institutions seem to stand out with their agile response to the crisis.

Much research of course is needed to find out exactly what has been the impact of the NEP and the exit of IIMs from the PGDM arena.
